Retro Fun — with Manic Miner

Manic Miner was the first game I ever owned. I loved it and played it to death. It is one of the very few games I ever completed end to end without cheats.

Retro at Heart

Every since I started development with iPhone I have alway been interested in retro games, hence Block Racer and Hampstead. I also have various test of making JetPac and Bump ‘n Run (Burning Rubber).

Mario Run

I was thinking about Mario Run a few weeks ago then I wonder what would it look like if some other games were turned into this format!

Then I had the idea of transforming my old faviourite Manic Miner into a end to end runner. I had no idea what to expect, or if it would be any fun.

I can tell you it is super frustrating fun… well at least for Central Cavern.

5 Weeks into Development.

I have been working for the past 5 weeks, from inception to coding in the evening and weekend.

I have also had to fight with Xcode and the new TileMapNodes which is very flakey in the Xcode Editor. I have implemented protocols for the first time (why did I not do this before). I have tried to implement a jump algorithm which matches the original — thanks to “Central Cavern (The Wonderful World of Willy)” Facebook group. Also it would not be Manic Miner without pixel perfect collision detection.

So here is a demo video of progress so far.
